He would later work on the animation Atlantis under Disney and a movie adaptation of his own comic Hellboy in 2004. Hellboy was an original series published by Dark Horse that brought Mignola into the limelight with its rich blend of horror, humor, and folklore. The success of Hellboy has led to several spin-off comics like B.P.R.D and Abe Sapien.
Alan Moore is quoted as saying Mignola's work looks like a blend of German expressionism and Jack Kirby who was in fact a major influence on Mignola. His work features characters and environments with heavily shadowed areas, bulky anatomy and a strong sense of design and composition. He works mostly with pen and ink exclusively but at times does watercolor treatments for covers. Hellboy has also been made into feature length animations.
